From Local Initiative to National Movement
Australian Art 2025 began in 2018 as a grassroots initiative in Sydney, when a group of passionate curators, artists, and cultural advocates came together with a vision to revolutionize how Australian art is experienced, shared, and preserved. What started as a small collective working out of a repurposed warehouse in Marrickville has evolved into the country's most forward-thinking art platform.
Our founding team, led by Indigenous curator Jessica Munroe and digital art pioneer Michael Chen, recognized a critical gap in Australia's cultural landscape: the need for a comprehensive platform that connects traditional art forms with emerging technologies while celebrating the country's unique cultural identity.
Through partnerships with regional galleries, Indigenous art centers, and tech innovators, we've built a network that spans the continent. In 2021, we secured major funding from the Australia Council for the Arts and private philanthropists, allowing us to expand our operations nationally and develop our digital preservation initiatives.
Today, as we approach 2025, our organization stands at the intersection of tradition and innovation, bringing together over 5,000 artists, 350 galleries, and countless art enthusiasts in a shared celebration of Australia's artistic heritage and future.
